Sponsoring with local responsibility
NA feels very committed to the Hanseatic City of Hamburg and has become involved in many sectors to contribute to the city. Social and cultural projects are sponsored and support is given in the maintenance of important monuments and buildings. At the moment NA is participating in several projects in Hamburg. Thus, the St. Michaelis Church, a landmark in Hamburg, and the church St. Katharinen urgently need new roofings. NA is providing copper sheets in the required quantity for this new roofing and is taking back the old copper for recycling. At the same time NA presents an exhibition „The new Michel roof – Copper so close to the heavens”. If you would like to learn more about the exhibition, please click here.

Norddeutsche Affinerie has helped Hamburg’s churches before: in 2000 and 2001 two of the main churches, St. Petri and St. Jacobi, received new copper roofs with the help of NA and about 15 years ago the Archangel Michael, which hangs over the entrance to the Michel, was extensively restored.

Copper does not only play an important role in modern technology. Music would also be unthinkable without copper. Alloys with copper ensure that wind instruments have the right tone. Since 2001 NA has been the partner and exclusive sponsor of certain concerts of the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival (SHMF), which focuses on the promotion of young musicians from all over the world. Since 2004 the NA Communication Centre "Alte Schlosserei" is listed as one of the SHMF concert halls and has proven itself to be a good venue for classical music due to the good acoustics.
NA also supports special projects that arise in the south of Hamburg. Social commitment in the neighbouring suburbs of Veddel, Wilhelmsburg and Rothenburgsort is very much to the fore. An example is the partnership agreement with the Slomanstieg School in Veddel, that enables the pupils of the eight class to have a work experience day in the workshops at NA once a week. In addition, the Slomanstieg School and Hamburg industrial enterprises, including NA, started the project “9-Plus” in 2007. Pupils who do not find an apprenticeship after completing their schooling have the possibility of receiving training in their chosen trade and go to school on the other two days. After becoming better qualified in this additional year, the pupils have significantly better prospects of finding an apprenticeship and may even be offered an apprenticeship in the company where they are training. Up to six months may also be saved on the subsequent apprenticeship when they start.

Another focal point is the sponsoring of team sports that demonstrate fairness and strenghten the team spirit.
Thus, NA has sponsored the ladies volleyball team of TV Fischbek since 2003 and since 2006 has even been its main sponsor. Since the season 2006/07 this successful German volleyball league team has been renamed NA.Hamburg.
The SG Wilhelmsburg handball teams have been supported by NA as their main sponsor since 1999.
Further information on the teams and the dates of their games can be found at www.na.hamburg-volleyball.de and www.sgwilhelmsburg.de.
In 2004 the tsunami in Asia cost 250,000 human lives, of which about 45,000 were lost in Sri Lanka alone. The NA employees wanted to help as a result of the terrible devastation. € 75,000 was collected by the employees of Europe’s largest copper producer. The aim was to support tsunami victims who had not been helped before at the time. CEO Dr Werner Marnette had promised to treble every Euro donated. As a result € 225,000 was collected in total, an amount that can do a lot of good in a poor country like Sri Lanka. It was possible to build a whole village with this sum. The idea came from company physician Dr Thomas Schultek. He also took over the organisation of the relief operation. “Ape Gama” – “our village”, is the name. The foundation stone was laid in June 2005; the 25 houses are meanwhile all occupied by local families.
