| Economical use of energy |
|
| Energy-intensive companies like NA mostly are among the most energy-effective companies. At NA, we have made the long-term saving of resources into one of our main corporate targets and pursue it resolutely. |

Our main energy carriers are electricity and natural gas which we procure from energy utilities. We use both energy sources to about the same extent. Other energy carriers are fossil fuel, such as coke, heating oil, diesel fuel for vehicles and residual oil. Our total energy requirement at the Hamburg site has stayed almost constant since fiscal 2000/01 despite increased production. Accordingly, the specific energy requirement has declined significantly. Compared with fiscal 1999/00 we have achieved a reduction in specific energy consumption of 29 %.
At the Lünen site, a substantial contribution to the efficient utilisation of energy was made by replacing the coal-fired shaft furnace with the modern KRS. Specific energy consumption has been reduced since 1990 by 62 % by the economical and efficient use of energy. |
