Emissions
Dust and gases that are discharged from stacks into the air are classified as direct emissions. Dust and gases from all other indirect sources, such as opening for ventilation in the production halls or open storage areas and traffic routes are classified as fugitive emissions. Since direct emissions have already been drastically reduced, attention is drawn to fugitive emissions. The measures to protect the environment that are still planned at Norddeutsche Affinerie therefore concentrate on reducing fugitive emissions.

In fiscal 2005/06 at the Hamburg site we reduced specific emissions further compared with fiscal 2004/05. Apart from SO2 emissions, which were maintained at a constant level, the main absolute emissions were also reduced despite the record copper production.
We are again expecting a significant decrease in absolute emissions for the current fiscal year. The RWN 2004 project has taken effect here. Thanks to these measures to protect the environment that involved a capital expenditure volume of € 6 million, fugitive emissions were decisively reduced in the secondary smelter (RWN) in which our own and bought metal-bearing intermediates as well as recycling materials are processed.
In Lünen a new, environmentally-safe and energy-saving smelting system (the Kayer Recycling Sytem (KRS)) was developed involving capital expenditure of some € 40 million. Further capital expenditure focused, in particular, on the reduction of fugitive emissions in the smelting facilities and during storage and handling of feed materials. Specific emissions have been reduced at the Lünen site by some 70 % since 1990, bringing them to a level significantly under the limit laid down by the authorities. In addition, € 10 million are being invested as part of a voluntarily agreed emission reduction programme to improve the ambient air quality in the vicinity of the works. On top of this, a further € 8.5 million is being invested in environmental protection.
