| Primary copper production |
 |
| We recover more than 60% of the copper produced at NA from primary raw materials. Copper concentrates sourced worldwide make up the main part of these. Thus, a diversification of mine sites and countries of origin ensures a reliable supply for our plants and makes us largely independent of unforeseeable political and economic developments. In the processing of copper concentrates in our Hamburg works we show how efficient and environmentally friendly processes complement each other and at the same time conserve resources. Continuous performance enhancement and the strengthening of the existing business are the basis of our strategy to ensure that this does not change. In 2003 we expanded the capacity of our concentrate processing facilities to 1.15 million tonnes p.a. as part of various expansion and optimisation measures taken. |

| Secondary copper production |
 |
Secondary raw materials as well as copper bearing scrap make up our second main pillar in copper production. The Hüttenwerke Kayser site has the most modern, high-performance plant for recycling copper worldwide. The growing significance of recycling presents an opportunity and a challenge for us.
With the Kayser Recycling System (KRS) developed at Hüttenwerke Kayser, we are targeting complex, low metal-bearing recycling materials and wastes, such as shredder fractions from end-of-life vehicle recycling, electro and electronic scrap as well as residues from the metal-processing industry. The new wording of the end-of-life vehicle directive and the electronic scrap legislation passed by the German Government enable us to have easier access to further raw material sources on the German market. Our strategy in the recycling markets as well is aimed at a wide supply base.
