Copper is cast continuously to an endless bar with a trapeze-shaped cross section using the Southwire process.
After about half a rotation the solidified bar rises from the casting wheel and is then channelled
into the following hot rolling process.
The train of rolls itself consists of 13 double rolling stands in which calibrated pairs of
rolls are arranged alternating horizontally and vertically. The final diameter of the almost
circular continuous cast rod amounts to 8 mm. Owing to the reducing cross-section the speed
of the rod increases up to 110 km/h.

After the train of rolls the rod is pickled and sealed with a wax emulsion.
The final production step is the coiling of the continuous casting rod to rod coils with a unit
weight of up to 6 tonnes. The coils are weighed, packed and finally despatched.
Depending on the customer’s requirements the rod can have a smooth or defined coarse surface. On
request, our continuous cast rod can also be produced with diameters of up to 21.4 mm.
Our modern quality management system for the production and marketing of NA Rod fulfils the requirements
of DIN EN ISO 2001:2000 and has been certified since 1994. The quality of our rod is ensured by sophisticated
process controls and the latest technology for inspecting and monitoring the product. |
