Production
High-purity electrolytic copper is melted in two natural gas-heated cathode shaft furnaces whilst the atmosphere is stringently monitored. The molten copper is then cast into continuous cast shapes in three casting plants using technology developed by NA to control the melt level in the mould. Up to six strands can be operated in parallel in each casting plant. Without interrupting the casting process, the bars are sawn to the required lengths by a flying saw, inspected and finally delivered on schedule from our storage to the customer by rail, truck or ship.
State-of-the-art process control technology and constant monitoring of all production parameters ensure consistent and approved quality.
Since autumn 2000 shapes have been cast in oxygen-free copper and OF-copper based alloys on an additional casting line. The high-purity NA-ESN cathodes are initially fed into the electrically heated melting furnace. The melt is subsequently transferred discontinuously into the movable casting furnace. The metal properties are then adjusted in this furnace, which is also electrically heated. The shapes are semi-continuously cast in moulds and after subsequent inspection and analysing are sawn to the lengths required by the respective customer and loaded for shipment. NA´s competence in the production of oxygen-free copper materials and large shapes has again been significantly enhanced as a result of this state-of-the-art plant.
