| Copper ore is mainly mined in Central and South America, the United States of America, Canada, but also in Africa, Asia, Australia and to a lesser degree in Europe. |

The copper ore (copper content 0.5 – 4%) is already processed in the mine to a concentrate which on average contains about
- 30 % copper (Cu)
- 30 % iron (Fe)
- 30 % sulphur (S).

NA procures copper concentrates largely under long-term supply agreements, which are concluded direct with the mines. The remaining requirements are covered by using chances on the spot market.
The copper concentrates are supplied from the countries of origin to NA via the Hamburg harbour. A crane facility specially developed by us ensures dust-free, environmentally friendly delivery of the material. We take a representative sample from a weighing bunker which is then analysed in detailed by the chemists in our main laboratory. Particular care must be taken since the metal contents determined form the basis for the calculations with the suppliers. As a smelter without its own mines, NA pays the raw materials in accordance with the respective price for refined metals on the metal exchanges less a treatment and refining charge.
